Advancement is a very important tenet of scouting. Most of the advancement is done through
the Merit Badge program. Because scouting is a strongly boy run program the
direction and success of a boy's scouting career are controlled to a great
extent by the boy. Completion of merit badges is stressed not only because it is a
requirement to get at least 21 to become an Eagle Scout but also because of the
potential opportunities that they offer. There are currently 121 merit badges
which means aside from the 11 required ones there are one hundred and ten merit
badges for you to get and more fields to explore. Many boys have been influenced
so much that they have chosen a career in a field introduced to to them by merit
badges. They also teach a great deal of information about a particular area and
have practical applications. For example this article was written for a
requirement for Communications merit badge.
